| canon character/series: Anna-Marie D'Ancanto [Rogue] / Marvel Universe name: Rogue (Anna-Marie D'Ancanto). Rogue is an alias she took up after being exiled, and he is keeping hold of it for the time being. age: 23 gender: Female race/ethnicity: American / Caucasian sexuality: Rogue is predominantly heterosexual in nature, although it becomes apparent that as her mutated power develops, her sexuality matters less and less in the grand scheme of things; if one cannot touch another without harming them, then sexual activity becomes obsolete regardless of intent. At least, this is the way Rogue thinks about it. appearance: Anne-Marie is a pretty enough young woman; she's not the kind of stunner that gets pictured in magazines, but she's good-looking enough to get here by in a world that is, where she comes from, still very much governed by men. She's tall for a girl at 5'9", and made sturdily - she's slim, but there is nothing slender nor delicate about her - her hips, shoulders and breasts are comparatively large, and her legs are long. There is an air of strength about her, and competence - she's a practical girl, and looks it. However, at the same time, she certainly does look feminine - mainly due to her proportions and her face rather than any effort on her part. She has long, chestnut hair, with the recent addition from the past few years of a streak of white at the front (due to the invocation of her genetic mutation at the age of eighteen). Her eyes are a hazel colour, and are very expressive; any and all emotion from anger or determination to compassion or hope are very easily seen within them, and this feature is something which she often curses - sometimes it would be nice for her to be able to lie well, particularly of late. Her clothing choices can be fairly conservative, although she certainly does have an excuse for this - with the possibility of her touch harming a person, she finds it best to cover up as much skin as she can. Prior to her mutation, she didn't cover up to anywhere near the same extent; living on the typical 'if you've got it, flaunt it' principle of teenagerdom. However, upon turning eighteen she also was involved in a variety of rebellious activities, and had to dress appropriately. These days, she is usually wearing a long trench coat made out of rather battered black suede (yet it's rather more grey in places where it has been scuffed); underneath, a long-sleeved shirt in green or white, a reminder of the colours she preferred to wear as a teenager, and usually a pair of fitted black trousers. Adding to this ensemble is a pair of well-broken-in, now-rather-old (but still keeping the elements away from her feet, she might add) heavy boots, and a floppy straw sunhat, up into which her hair is normally tucked during days of work. She no longer bothers with 'pretty' clothes; she is only concerned with functional. The last notable element in her wardrobe is a pair of thick gloves to prevent her hands from having a nasty effect on others - come rain or shine, even in what might seem like suffocating heat, she is always wearing gloves. Personal discomfort, to her, is not the issue. personality: The personality that Rogue holds at the present time is sadly very different from the one she had as a child. When she was younger, she was a chirpy, happy-go-lucky child who took no nonsense and had a quite forthright nature; unconcerned by the fact that she was rather gawky and taller than the other children at that age. She has never bee na small woman; she has always been the more tall and strong type of girl, the one that boys played football with as opposed to date, and her personality tends to reflect this. She doesn't fuss about being dirty, or messy; she gets on with the task at hand without whinging or complaining all that much. This doesn't mean she can't be sweet, or kind; she can, it's just that lately she finds very little to be that way about. She has quite a light voice, with a flowing Southern accent. She likes to tackle things head-on, as opposed to just letting them lie - Rogue is quite gung-ho, particularly regarding situations that could be dangerous or violent, preferring to grab the bull by the horns rather than avoiding things and suffering for them later. Even as she was affected by her mutation, this has not changed about her; there are in fact many things that have not. She is not the revolutionary she had been before the mutation occurred; yet, she still believes in the ideals and thinks of them as something she would love, if they lived in a better world. Now, though, she is a jaded soul, tired of looking for support in places where there is none to be found. She had been determined; now, she just cannot be bothered, and would instead strive toward a personal goal rather than the one for the everyone else who hadn't bothered to support her. Her current goal is selfish, but understandable; this is the same for many of Rogue's actions at the present time. She will work toward a common good, but only if it suits her. Rogue, in short, is confident, capable, pragmatic and calm. She's not horribly anti-social, regardless of her mutation; she quite likes people, although of course now she refuses to get too close to anyone for fear of harming them. This makes her self-flagellating in a way, but she doesn't show that very much; she can be quite apathetic too, these days, but she doesn't draw attention to that either. In a way, she's ashamed of being that way. abilities/weaponry: Rogue is quite a tough woman; without so much as discussing her mutant power, it is plausible to talk about abilities and weaponry. First of all, she has learned to be a good motivational speaker - she is only uncomfortable, obviously, with touching. Any other form of expressing herself, such as verbally, she is prefectly good at. Her opinions are singularly important to her, especially on the worth of revolution, and because of this she can often make others think the same way. She is not incredibly intelligent or wise; however, she does have an extremely good right hook, something which she has spent what is really far too much time exercising. She is well-equipped for life at sea, having picked up a variety's of seaman's abilities from previous pirate ships. She has sailed on ships both successful and unsuccessful, and knows that the lows come with the highs. She can tie knots efficiently, knows how to load and fire cannons, can fight efficiently (although simply) with anything that comes to hand - she knows which end of the sword is meant to go into the person, for example. She also works on her own moral compass, which allows her to make her personal morals less of a standpoint when dealing with the less-principled areas of piracy, coping with this in exchange for travel. This means, of course, that as usual she does not complain. Finally, her mutant power is something that is also useful to Rogue - or, at least, it could be. At the moment, it is a blight on her, but there is potential there - with a simple touch, she can 'drain' a different lifeform; absorbing their lifeforce, memories, thoughts and also any abilities that they may have, anything from mutant powers to such things as magic. Rogue, however, is not fully aware of her ability's uses, as she primarily concentrates on its bad points. weaknesses: Her mutant power, both what it is and the way that Rogue sees herself because of it, is not so much a weakness as a damning mark on her character. Because of it, she hides behind clothes and a loud yet impervious personality; she is a hermit in her own skin, refusing to reach out to others for fear of what it might do to them - which is, in most cases, quite right. Her power could easily be a strength as well as a weakness, but since she hates it quite as much as she does, it merely dominates her personality and the way she views others. Partially due to this, Rogue is independent to a fault - as she is used to people being afraid of her due to her mutation, she is used to doing things on her own, and can occasionally entirely forget that there are other people working alongside her who want to, or whose job it is to, help her. Because of this, she can alienate people merely by being too self-focused; she certainly isn't selfish entirely, she can just be absent-minded at times. Plus, there is the 'once bitten, twice shy' issue, which is primarily the fault of one Remy LeBeau and his deciding to up and leave her not once, but twice. She counts him among her friends, and misses him, but he has still had an effect on her - she just doesn't trust very easily. In reality, she has abandonment issues, but she would never like to think of them that way. Rogue is, unfortunately, also easily used as a tool by other people as her power isn't voluntary; it happens whether she pleases or not. Thus, she could very easily be forced to touch others and absorb whatever ability, memory or life the person forcing her would want; although, of course, she wouldn't be forced to tell secrets or use abilities. history: Anne-Marine D'Ancanto was born to loving yet libertarian parents in Louisiana, one of the most southern areas of the stronghold of the Power. However, it would be immediately apparent that such a family - with primarily rebellious alliegances and strong viewpoints on the direction the world was taking - would not eternally be welcome in the back garden of a global dictatorship. Yet, Anne-Marie was hardly prepared for a life of rebellion and eventual exile - her early life was dedicated to frivolity and play, to school and books and friends and everythin a child should, with all hope, have. She was a perfectly normal little girl, or so she and her parents thought. She went to school in the town she lived in, and lived a fairly provincial life. She didn't always have friends - she was quite a gawky child as previously mentioned, all arms and legs and just that bit too tall, but yet she was rarely lonely. Her upbringing wasn't perfect, as no-one's is really, but it was certainly normal. She was a happy child. At 15, she attended her first demonstration against dictatorial rule, with both of her parents. Unfortunately, the demonstration ended badly, with Anne-Marie losing her parents in the trampling masses and having to shelter in an alleyway until the demo was over. Unfortunately, when she emerged from the alleyway, she saw for the first time the pure brutality of the Power's peacekeeping forces; she watched them shoot dead two family friends who rallied against them, and it was here that Anne-Marie's mentality took a turn for libertarianism and away for any kind of support or even acceptance she may ever have held for the Power. This was happening synonymously to people throughout the general area, and by 17, Anne-Marie was a young but prominent figure in a rebel group; proud parents watching her every move, and encouraging her on every step of the way. Rogue wasn't sure, at the time, whether she was involved because she wanted to be or because her parents wanted it; nevertheless, she persisted, helping to plan several successful demonstrations wherein the Power's peacekeepers would have no excuse for violence. Of course, she was the perfect flag for the rebellion; a quite-respectable, young woman. Yet, it was about at this time that she met Remy LeBeau for the first time, or thereabouts. He was a fellow Southerner, a fellow revolutionary, and just that little bit older, and Anne-Marie really did rather enjoy his company; they planned several events and schemes together, and also participated in an active romantic relationship. However, eventually Remy fled the area and Anne-Marie, although somewhat heartbroken for a little while, persisted in her career as a rebel. The death of her aging parents in a demonstration that was not organised by her just enhanced her desire to overthrow the dictatorship, and her schemes became far wilder without the guiding influence of her parents and Remy respectively. And the group followed her, just because she had been practical before. It was on the day of the scheme that would cause her exile when she woke up to find that she had been damned with a mutation. She had found out in a somewhat clichéd fashion; a frail old lady had needed help with her shopping, Anne-Marie's hand had brushed hers, and the girl had felt a strange shock rushing through her system. She had closed her eyes initially, and when she opened them again, the woman had collapsed onto the ground, stone dead. Anne-Marie didn't understand, of course; she didn't understand until a time later, when she met a man who could tell her exactly what had happened to her. She, of course, had no real time to think about what had happened; there was no-one around at the time, so she just fled the scene, terrified. This is something she still regrets to the present day. The scheme of the day was a complex raid on the Peacekeeping force headquarters in the state capital; Rogue, unsettled by events earlier in the day, did not lead appropriately and due to this the mission was a failure. All involved were prosecuted - many of Anne-Marie's compatriots were executed, but since the ringleader herself was still a minor, she was committed to exile instead of death. Anne-Marie, deciding to partake again in her own personal form of rebellion, cut off half her hair and adopted an entirely different style of dress to change her appearance, and renamed herself 'Rogue', answering no longer to Anne-Marie. From then, she wandered the country for a while, trying to find out how many would dare rise against the Power in a fully-orchestrated violent rebellion. The only answer she found was 'not enough', which disappointed her. She met Remy LeBeau again two years after her mutant ability had first emerged, two years after she had become Rogue. By then, many things had changed about the person she was; she had no more patience for the frivolous, and dressed to show this; she had a bold white streak in her hair which she had never created. He, no doubt, found her much different to the way he had left her, and everything had to be different between them, but Remy was easy-going, and Rogue was pragmatic. It lasted for a time, and Rogue had been happy; but of course, they decided to part again. Rogue had expected this would happen, as she was no longer exactly what a man would look for in a woman; she was growing steadily used to being left by him. Rogue gave up, then, on the country she had been born in, and travelled by sea to a new place in order to find support for her revolution from different people. She tried in many places; different countries, different ships, never staying anywhere for long, and had been slowing developing a support network - however, she saw that it was nowhere near enough, tired of attempting to provoke fight in people who seemed to have none, and gave up. She intends to travel now on a new ship to find something in life that can cure her of her damning mutation, but she has had very little luck thus far. Over her time at sea, three years now to date, Rogue has become quite an accomplished pirate, but her last ship ran aground and sank. Now, she is looking for new transportatiion. crew position: "quartermaster". |
